This Oryx has a brown and white mask on its face. Its fur is basically white with rusty brown coloured neck and chest. Both sexes have horns, although they are thinner in the females. This Scimitar Oryx has many physiological adaptations that enable it to preserve water in the body, its kidneys are very efficient and it only sweats when its body temperature exceeds 46ºC.
Its large hoofs help it to spread the weight of its robust body over the soft sand. It forms mixed nomadic herds of up to 20-40 individuals, within which the males display and grapple for the right to mate with the females. Excessive hunting and the loss of habitat, including competition with domestic livestock, have been the main reasons for the extinction of the wild population of this species.
