The main mission of Selwo Aventura is to actively participate in Conservation of species endangered in the wild, Scientific Research on the animals we host and Environmental Education about Biodiversity, through the dissemination of wildlife and their natural habitats.
All the Selwo Aventura team is committed to the preservation of species, combining our expertise in keeping wild animals in captivity with the most modern conservation techniques, and our dedication to inspiring a passion for nature.
We conduct this work in collaboration with other zoological institutions, universities, and research centers. We follow the guidelines and strategies established by the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA), the Iberian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AIZA) and the existing legislation and regulations on conservation and animal welfare.
Our Collection Plan, that is, the criteria that determines the animal species that we take under our care, is based on a thematic management of species mainly from the African continent. These species represent the majority of the international breeding programs in captivity of endangered species (EEP, European Endangered Species Program, and ESB, European StudBook) in which we participate.
The location of Selwo Aventura Estepona, in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, favors geographical and meteorological conditions similar, or even equal, to those of different regions of Africa. Thus, within the park we have two large differentiated areas: one, with tropical rainforest conditions (represented in the territories of the Nature Gateway and the Birds Canyon) and another with relief, vegetation and temperature similar to the great African savannahs (where the thematic territories of the Central Village and the Lakes Reserve are located).
In any case, we also have lines of work for programs of species from other continents that require our participation, including our close environment, participating in EEP and ESB of species originating from other parts of the world and being part of breeding programs of both non-native species and native fauna.
