Here at Selwo, we’re celebrating! With the birth of two Atlas lions, we’re taking another step forward in the conservation of this animal, which has become extinct in the wild due to human activity but which could be brought back thanks to a select group of zoos where we ensure its survival.
Don’t miss the activities and educational talks to welcome them and learn more about this species. It’s a unique opportunity!
With the help of our veterinary team, our cubs have reached an important milestone: the medical examination to determine their sex, accompanied by a check-up to ensure they receive the best possible care and that everything is in order.
There is an interesting detail during the process: before being returned to their mother, the cubs are gently rubbed with straw from their natural environment so that they are imbued with familiar scents, thereby reducing any human odours picked up whilst being handled.
This monitoring is particularly important when it comes to the Atlas lion, whose population has disappeared from the wild in North Africa. Its conservation now depends on the coordinated efforts of zoological institutions and conservation programmes such as the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP).
Follow the development and growth of these Atlas lion cubs on our social media and come and meet them as soon as possible at Selwo Aventura to celebrate this milestone in the conservation of endangered species together.
Our two Atlas lion cubs now have names and, little by little, they’re letting us discover what each of them is like!
Don’t miss their day-to-day adventures on our social media… and share this special moment with us!
Kion is the calmer of the two: observant, laid-back and the sort who prefers to take his time before setting out to discover something new.
Tao is the more curious of the two: restless, mischievous and with a touch of rebellion that always has us wondering what his next adventure will be.
