These bats range from dark brown to chalk grey on the back, the lower body is lighter and smoky grey in colour. In this particular case, the fur extends along each forearm, which is not common amongst these mammals.
They are also the only frugivorous species that uses the sharp acoustic signals of ecolocation. This means that this bat prowls and rests in dark caves, instead of sleeping in trees like the rest of its species. During the day, it gathers in dark caves, where the conditions are more humid and the temperature more constant than outside. Bats compensate the cold by sticking together to retain body heat in the most efficient manner possible. Although its faces a series of threats (they are hunted for food or killed as a pest by fruit farmers), none of them are deemed a serious risk for the species on global level.
