Native to South America, the Bird of paradise flower is a perennial herbaceous plant grown in warm, subtropical and Mediterranean climates. Its leaves are large, oval in shape and with prominent veining.

The flowers are the most striking feature of this plant, with each flower stalk holding between 5 and 8 of them. Flowers emerge from the hard stalk consisting of 3 bright orange sepals and 3 bright blue petals.
