It is one of the largest Ibises. The head and neck have no feathers and the skin is black. The bill is black, long, arched downwards and relatively robust if we compare it to that of other ibises.
The plumage is white apart from at the tip of the primary feathers in the wings and the ornamental feathers that grow on the posterior of the body. The nest is a huge platform of sticks and branches built in trees or shrubs, or constructed on the ground on rocky islands.
